to sendme on to the next village. As a matter of fact theyare not anxious to kill and eat every stranger, andthey resort to cannibalism only on stated occasions :as a punishment, at funerals, in war, and in connec-tion with certain religious ceremonies. The Nsakkaras know very well that the Govern-ment would take steps to punish them if they wereto attack a European. Why should they thereforego in search of trouble, when there are plenty ofpeople available whom they can sacrifice with impunity ?But if a European were to fall into their hands onthe occasion of the death of a sultan, or some similarfunction, far away from the main road, he wouldrun a very serious risk of being assimilated by aNsakkara. European trade is almost entirely confined to theUbangi and Mbomu Rivers, and it is only on rareoccasions that a Companys agent penetrates intothe interior in search of india-rubber or ivory. Afew months before my arrival the Government sentan expedition into the country north of Bangassu

Nsakara woman of the Court of Sultan Bangassu Water-colour by E. M. Heims SULTANATES OF BANGASSU AND RAFAI 205 and Rafai, Captain Jaquiers, the Commandant ofMobaye, and Lieutenant Martin having undertakento explore this part. As a proof of my assertion that the Nsakkaras donot kill and eat every European they come across, but on the contrary have been known to go out oftheir way to render him assistance, I will here relatean adventure of Lieutenant Martins, which is pro-bably the most terrible that has ever befallen anyone. Martin had started on the above-mentioned ex-pedition, in company with Captain Jaquiers. Onemorning whilst they were camping in the bush, theywanted some game for dinner, and Martin accordinglyset off with his boy, with only five cartridges inhis pocket. At about noon, having shot a buck, he started toreturn to camp. He missed his way, and lost his boy,but presently came across two of his men, who werelooking for fruit. One of them undertook to guidehim back to camp
