MONTAGNES DE SAINT-DOMINGUE. 755 nest dabord, dans la partie étroite, jusquau nord de Santo-Domingo,quune longue croupe ravinée par les eaux courantes et nayant nullepart plus de 500 mètres en hauteur. Mais vers le milieu de lîle, le reliefsaccroît et sélargit, puis se divise en deux branches, offrant ainsi dans saforme comme un rudiment des contours généraux du corps insulaire. Deces deux rameaux, le plus fort est celui qui se dirige vers le nord-ouest etdont le prolongement, par delà le canal du Vent, est le croissant de Cuba.Cet axe majeur du système orographique dHaïti, lossature centrale, estlensemble de crêtes et de sommets qui a reçu des anciens Haïtiens lenom de Cibao, cest-à -dire la « Roche » ou le « Mont » par excellence.
