Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A stained glass window from the south aisle of the choir at Notre-Dame de Chartres known as 'Notre-Dame de la Belle Verrière' or 'The Blue Virgin'. The window contains twelfth-century panels (on a red background) salvaged from the Romanesque church that burnt down in 1194 set within thirteenth-century panels (on a blue background) in order to bring the old window to the same dimensions as those installed in the early 1200s. The earlier panels feature the Virgin enthroned with the Chirst Child on her lap supported by four angels holding columns below. The Holy Spirit, represented by a dove, surmounts this section. The later panels comprise a border of angels with candles and censers surrounding the older glass and New Testament scenes below. The story of the Marriage Feast at Cana is related in six scenes immediately below the enthroned Virgin and Child and, in the lowest register, the three temptations of Christ are represented.
