Text Appearing Before Image:
several porcelain, a fewbronze articles, many tiles and a farrago of rubbish. On the cross-road some more barracks—a long low building. Thelittle men in front of it were wearing not only red collars but alsored dolmans. Here the cavalry are garrisoned. A little scrap of ahussar was just galloping home. This warrior is not a whit tallerthan Hop-o-my-Thumb—his charger scarce larger than a well-developed calf of two months. By the side of this toy hussar rattleda formidable sabre which seemed in danger of pulling him downfrom his horse. His seat is without that poor enough. On hiscoming nearer I saw that the murderous instrument is an ordinarycavalry sword. His uniform is the most checkered I ever saw, though in this respect all European nations are conspicuous enough. The dolman of the Korean hussar is of a cinnamon colour, hiscollar and cuffs emerald green, and his breeches stripes saffron. If itwas the plumage of a parrot that served the model they have attainedit most effectually.
Text Appearing After Image:
1904.) on First Impressions of Seoul. 507 Canine Street Police. I was wandering further on, when in front of a gate some dogsnearly knocked me down. The streets of Seoul, like those of Pekin and Constantinople, arefull of them, but the dogs here are well kept and strong. If a singleone of these starts barking, this signal of some approaching dangeris in a minute responded to throughout a whole quarter. It was soin my case. As I came too near the threshold the guardian on dutythere was under the impression that I intended to encroach on hisdomain. His attitude towards me was anything but friendly, andnot being armed with either stick or umbrella I instinctively stoopeddown to pick up a stone. This movement on my part, however, wassufficient to make him drive me summarily into his own courtyard. Apropos of the Korean canine race, the subject is worthy of a fewwords, because they are some of the most typical figures in the streetsof Seoul. I must confess I never have seen better trained
