On our left was thetown of Rio, standing between several loftyeminences; not, like Rome and Constantinople,ascending over them, but the streets windingtheir way in the valleys below, and churchesand convents only crowning the hills above.In the bay were multitudes of ships of allnations, both of war and commerce; notcrowded together, as in our contracted rivers,but spread over the wide expanse of waters,and dotting the surface in all directions. Inthe distance were the Organ mountains, form-ing a singular back-ground to this picture.These are a range of granite pikes, bristlingup along the horizon, and piercing the cloudswith their long sharp summits, projected onthe sky like organ pipes in a vast cathedral,and hence deriving their extraordinary appel-lation.
