Description

Notharctus tenebrosus Leidy, 1870 - fossil primate skeleton from the Eocene of Wyoming, USA. (public display, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois, USA) (cast; mostly based on AMNH 127167, American Museum of Natural History, New York City, New York, USA)

From museum signage: "With its grasping hands and feet, forward-facing eyes, and large brain (relative to its body size), this little early primate had much in common with you. Though Notharctus lived 50 million years ago, because it had these key primate features, it is considered to be one of the first "modern" primates."
