f the Le-clanche battery being said to be equal to 40 of Daniells. Its internal (or liquid) resistance is also said to be very small. It has been adopted by the chemius de fer de lEst, deFOuest, du Eord, de Paris, and Lyons a la Mediterranee, andin the former is said to have been tried for ten monthswith very excellent results. The advantages claimed for it are, absence of chemicalaction when the battery circuit is not complete, and con-sequently no waste of material; it requires little or no look-ing after$ the cost of maintenance is small; it cannot beinjured by mixing or upsetting the liquids; the battery, ready for action, may be placed in store without deteriora-tion or loss in its component parts; and it possesses greatfacility for transport, without injury to the working powers. This battery seems to possess qualities which may ren-der it useful as an agent for submarine mining purposes, and experiments should be made with it in order to ascer-tain its advantages for this purpose.
