Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "Hard times" token, also known at a "not cent" because of the mandatory disclaimer "not one cent" on the reverse.

During a financial crisis, known as the "hard times", merchants issued their own tokens which took the place of real US cents and were widely accepted as one cent coins. To avoid counterfeiting charges they had to include the phrase "not one cent" on the reverse. This was often used to make a political statement such as "millions for defense -not one cent - for tribute" or "millions for defense -not one cent - for the widows"

Later, when hard times tokens were no longer made or needed, some unscrupulous individuals would chisel or file the "not" from the token and try to pass it off as a real U.S. Cent. The similarity in appearance to U.S. large cents made this fairly easy. Such mutilated examples have less value to purists but have an added historical interest as evidence of a fraudulent practice committed by an unknown individual who is now long dead.
