Description

Local train on Nariz del Diablo - or "the Devil's Nose" - south of Alausi, Ecuador and operated by Tren Ecuador on the Guayaquil-Quito Railway.

The railway is going upward in elevation from the lower left of the picture (crossing the bridge), zig-zagging across the face of "the nose" and then the upper track continues on following the river through the valley to the left of the nose.

The change in elevation from the bridge to the valley beyond was too high to run the railway directly up the valley, so the engineers extended the track around the nose (with switches at each end) to allow the track to maintain an acceptable grade. This section of the railway was constructed between 1899 and 1902.

This photo was taken from an observation point across the valley from the "nose". We later rode our train (which is the one sitting on the siding with the locomotive disconnected) up Devil's Nose for the railway highlight of our trip.
