Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Elvington’s magnificent Halifax recreation is a truly amazing piece of work.

She began as just the rear fuselage of Halifax B Mk.II HR792, recovered from a crash site on the Isle of Lewis, but soon grew to a complete airframe using the centre wing section from Hastings TG536 and four Bristol Hercules engines from France, taken from retired Nord Noratlas transports. The rest of the aircraft was constructed here at Elvington and the finished aeroplane is stunning. Because of her mixed heritage, she has been allocated the British Aircraft Preservation Council identity BACP449. Her port side is painted to represent the famous “Friday The 13th” a 158 Squadron aeroplane which completed 128 missions while based at RAF Lissett, Yorkshire. She survived the war and was put on display in Oxford Street, but was then inexplicably scrapped. The starboard side is painted as ‘NP763’ and aeroplane of 346 ‘Guyenne’ Squadron of the RAF, which was based here at Elvington during 1944. Yorkshire Air Museum Elvington, North Yorkshire, UK.
