etary, 1872-80.He was a fine classical student. He left a widow and one daughter. CAPT. CHARLES RICH. Charles Rich, son of the Hon. Charles and Molly (Watts) Rich, was bornin Shoreham, Vt., July 30; 1802, and died in Lapeer, Mich., July 16, 1872. He attended the schools of histown and entered the Academy in1820, and graduated in 1823. He then engaged in farming inShoreham, making a specialty of rais-ing merino sheep, until 1837, when hesold his farm and located in Con-neautville, Crawford county, Penn.Here he engaged in the mercantilebusiness until 1847, when he locatedin Lapeer, )\lich., where he residedwhile his house was being erected inthe wilderness in Elba township. InJanuary, 1848, he removed to hisfarm and began the life of a pioneer.In January, 1857, he removed toLapeer, where he made his homeuntil his death. In 1867, he formeda partnership with E. L. Thompsonand John T. Rich of Shoreham, andengaged in the Imnbering businessCapt. Charles Rich. untU 1872, meeting with success.

SKETCHES OF ACADEMY CADETS. 207 He was at first a Whig and later a Republican in politics, and held severalpositions; was a candidate for Congress while residing in Pennsylvania;was county supervisor and county judge of Lapeer county, Michigan, whileresiding in Elba; was county clerk and register of deeds, 1857-61; judge ofprobate, 1861-69; also held several village offices in Lapeer. He was a memberof the State Board of Agriculture for four years and rendered valuable aidin promoting the State Agricultural College. Rich township in Michiganwas named in his honor. He served as captain in the Pennsylvania militia.He was a member of the Universalist Church. He was married March 18, 1827, to Betsey Treadway of Shoreham, whodied in April, 1884. Four children were born to them: Mary Elizabeth,born 1829, died August 6, 1847; Charles Napoleon, born in 1830, died Septem-ber 3, 1847; a daughter born in 1845 die<l in infancy; Mary Jeanette, bornJuly 10, 1851, died in 1864.
