BEDS FOUND IN THE VIKINGS SHIP GEAR AND THE SEPULCHRAL CHAMBER n of the roAvers when the ship was under oars. A pairof sheers Kke the boom-crutch of a modern yacht, butcarved into horses heads at the upper end, carried theridge-pole of the awning, or tjeld, which ran nearly thewhole length of the ship. Some pieces of homespun werefound, which were no doubt remains of the awning. The rudder, by the way, hung down considerably belowthe keel, but it could be triced up by a small line whenthe water was shallow ; the draught of the ship was aboutfour feet, and the freeboard three feet amidships. Butboth bow and stern rose much higher, finishing no doubtwith carved dragons. This part of the ship stuck up outof the mound of potters clay in which she was buried,and has therefore perished. There are no signs of any chafe or wear on any of thegear. The oar ports are as sharp and clean-cut as ifmade yesterday. The lower edge of the keel and stemis quite square and unworn.
