Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As skiers vied for the win in the FIS World Cup Finals on slopes near Oslo, Norway in mid-March, 2015 NASAs Terra satellite passed overhead. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard that satellite acquired this true-color image of Norway and Sweden on March 13, 2015.

Skiing is a popular winter sport in both Norway and Sweden, and many of the hundreds of resorts are open six months out of the year. The long-lasting, deep snow and rugged Scandinavian Mountains are well suited to the sport, as well as to traditional Arctic adventures such as reindeer racing and dog sledding. While outdoor life and natural areas abound, both countries also are home to major cities, such as Stockholm, Sweden with over 1.3 million inhabitants, and Oslo, Norway, whose metro area tops 1.2 million people.

In this image, bright white snow coats the Scandinavian Mountains, where the black borderlines delineate Norway, to the west from Sweden (east). A lighter coating of snow stipples the vegetation of most of Sweden, although the southern tip is primarily tan and green. A large bank of white cloud hangs over the Atlantic Ocean.
