Watch Out! I spotted a hen greater-sage grouse along the auto tour route the other night. When I stopped, I caught a glimpse of a small sage grouse chick diving into cover. The hen gave a barely audible alarm chirp, so I am shure many had already hidden in the sagebrush. I moved down the road and turned the truck around to watch from a distance with binoculars. The wind was blowing hard, and a male Northern harrier was gliding just over the top of the sagebrush. It glided right over the top of the sage grouse, and the hen greater sage-grouse sprang into the air, kicking and flapping at the harrier. The split second delay between my brain recognizing what was happening, and pushing the shutter button on the camera, missed the kicking and flapping part of the encounter. I did manage one exposure of the harrier after it had risen on the wind and the hen greater-sage grouse returning to earth, neither having taken their eyes off the other.
