Northern Paintbrush is a western disjunct species. On Isle Royale, the wildflower occurs on Lake Superior's rocky shorelines and interior ridgetops. Its more colorful cousin, the scarlet paintbrush occurs across Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but not on the island.
