| Description |
The silhouette of a northern harrier on Seedskadee NWR. As their former common name, marsh hawk, suggests they are birds of the marshes. They hover and glide on the winds above emergent vegetation, looking for a meadow vole, red winged blackbird, or other small bird or mammal. They are common nesters in the wet meadows on Seedskadee NWR. Males are gray above and whitish below with black wingtips, a dark trailing edge to the wing, and a black-banded tail. Females and immatures are brown, with black bands on the tail. Adult females have whitish undersides with brown streaks, whereas immatures are buffy, with less streaking.
