ndy and Aries andto the Germanic Empire, and in the 12th cent, it was created a free townby Frederick Barbarossa, who held several diets here. It was ceded toSpain by the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, was taken, lost, and retakenby the French during the 17th cent., and has belonged to France since theTreaty of Nimwegen in 1678. Besancon was unsuccessfully besieged bythe Austrians for four months in 1814. In 1870-71 it was not attacked bythe Germans, but served as a base for the operations of Bourbakis armyagainst Werder, who was besieging Belfort. Among the famous sons ofBesancon are Cardinal Granvella (1517-86), Marshal Moncey (1754-1842),General Pajol (1772-1844), Charles Nodier (1780-1844), and Victor Hugo(1802-85). From the Gare de la Viotte (PI. A, 1) we reach the centre of thetown either by making a rather long detour to the left through theFaubourg de la Mouillere and following the road that the omnibusestake, or by turning to the right through the Faubourg de Battant, tj^r:?tr
