Protestantism found ready acceptanceamong the inhabitants of Troyes, and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantesruined its industrial prosperity and reduced its population from 50,000 to12,(X)0. Troyes also suffered greatly from the campaign of 1814, owing toits position near the centre of the strategic operations. Among the famousnatives of Troyes are Chrestien the trouvere, Pope Urban IV., Nic. andPierre Mignard the painters, and the sculptors Girardon and Simart. Shortly after leaving the station we are confronted with the con-spicuous Monument of the Sons of the Aube (PI. A, 2), a marble group,by A. Boucher, commemorating the war of 1870-71. Turning to the right along the boulevard, we see, to the left, the-church of St. Nicolas (PL 3; A, 3), a Gothic building of the 16th cent.,with a porch of the 17th. The S. portal was begun in 1541.

To the left ofthe nave is a Holy Sepulchre, surmounted by a figure of Christ of theIbth century. In front of the Sepulchre is a line sculpture representing theAdoration of the Magi. By the pillar supporting the Calvary Chapel is abt. Bonaventura (early Ittth cent.); and to the left of the Sepulchre is aliavid, by Gentil. The aisles contain some good stained glass of theIbth century. To the left of the choir is an old painting on wood. Behind this church are the Market and the Place de la Bonne-ierie, containing a Monument (PI. 6j A, 3) erected in 1900 by thetown of Troyes to those who have rendered her service.
