Pipe Majors lead the Massed Pipes and Drums. Bands represented in front rank: Nairn Huntly Northern Constabulary Buckie Isle of Skye Inverness Royal British Legion NAIRN GAMES - SATURDAY 20/08/2016. After the drooking (soaking) our Band got playing at Loch Ness-side on Friday evening, and the thick haar (mist) and low temperature first thing this morning in Inverness, suncream (and sunglasses and a baseball cap) were the furthest things from my mind as I loaded up my holdall with bits and bobs (including my glengarry pipe band hat in case anyone else had forgotten theirs) ready for the trip to Nairn Games today. Silly me! Despite being in "civvies" (band polo shirt) I ended up wearing my Band glengarry to keep the roasting hot sun off my follicly challenged bonce! Today was an absolute cracker of a day, and Nairn Games was a really enjoyable event. There were about a dozen bands, most from the Grampian area plus the local Nairn & District Pipe Band, but Inverness was also well represented by Northern Constabulary PB and Inverness Royal British Legion - plus our friends from the Islands - Isle of Skye Pipe Band. As ever, ably organised by D/M John Matheson (Nairn) the Massed Bands Parade to the Games Field was a spectacular sight and sound, and the Massed Band performances around the Park, and the Finale march back up to the High Street, were impressive too. The lovely day made the sight even better with such a range of tartans on parade. Congratulations to D/M Derek Dean (Huntlyl & District) who won the Drum Majors competition (which was presented by TV personality Carol Vorderman, no less), and to D/M John Matheson who was awarded the new trophy for best dressed D/M, presented by recently retired Forres D/M Frances Christie who donated the prize. Our Band mustered 11 pipers and 5 drummers - like other bands at this time of years there is the inevitable unavailability of some players due to holiday commitments. work etc. Nonetheless, the Massed Bands was huge and very well received by the large numbers of spectators. Many thanks to Nairn Games Committee for inviting us - we had a great day and enjoyed supporting such a pleasant event. |
