English: Northampton market under threat The placard refers the town council's plans to reduce the size of the market so that space in the square is freed for 'events'. There is fierce opposition to this from the traders and the public. See http://www.northamptonmarket.biz/index.html
The market dates from the C13 and has a number of historic associations, including a riot here in 1874 provoked by a parliamentary election campaign involving Charles Bradlaugh, a radical atheist: he subsequently was elected and became the first avowedly atheist MP as well as supporting many other controversial causes. |
