Summary

[edit]
Description Replica of GWR broad gauge (7') 2-2-2T "North Star" replica, the first engine on owned by the company and easily the best one of the early engines which were complete failures - and the only one not built to Brunel's specifications! It and sister "Morning Star" were designed and built by Robert Stephenson & Co. of Newcastle in 1837 for the 5'6" gauge New Orleans Railway which proved unable to buy them; the GWR then bought them and they were regauged. They were delivered to the GWR before the railway was completed. "North Star" hauled the very first GWR train, a Directors' Special from Paddington to Maidenhead in 1838. It became the prototype for a production run of "Star" Class 2-2-2Ts ordered by Gooch, which proved very successful engines. At Swindon Museum of Steam, 07/09
