Title
North Petherton 2016T948. Corroded copper alloy coins covered in mud. Edges friable. As received 21.12.16
Description
English: Treasure case 2016 T948: Disclaimed, returned to finder

Report by Eleanor Ghey, British Museum

Circumstances of discovery

This hoard of Magnentian nummi was found on 8th November 2016 while metal-detecting on pasture. The coins were found together at 12-14 inches depth. Two ceramic body sherds were found nearby but are not definitely associated with the hoard and are very abraded (61.22g and 20.62g). They are of pale grey fabric with large quartz and flint ? inclusions and may be from a mortarium. One further illegible coin of first to third century date was found later 12 feet away and at a depth of three feet and is probably not related to this deposit. A late third century radiate could also be a stray find, although these are sometimes found in fourth century hoards.

The coins were manually cleaned in the conservation laboratory of the British Museum to allow identification but traces of organic material (possibly leather) were found on a few coins and retained. Due to the concreted condition of the coins the cleaning process did not render them all fully legible; over half of the coins could not be assigned to a mint. It is also likely that the hoard contains more irregular coins than could be positively identified, in common with other hoards of this date.

The coins

The hoard has a relatively narrow date range from AD 348 to 354. The bulk of the hoard is made up of the larger module FEL TEMP REPARATIO coins from AD 348 to 350 and smaller module Magnentian coins, particularly those of the two Victories VICTORIAE DD AVGGQ NN reverse types. It closes with one coin of SALVS AVG NOSTRI type, dated late in the reign of Magnentius, probably to early AD 353 and a single post-Magnentian FEL TEMP falling horseman coin of Constantius Gallus Caesar dated AD 353-4. The mints that could be identified were all of the Western Empire. Hoards of similar date include the Wheaton Aston, Staffordshire hoard and the Wokingham hoard.

R. Bland 1997. Wheaton Aston, Staffordshire, in Coin hoards from Roman Britain X, 392-397; J. A. Greenaway and G. C. Boon 1992. Wokingham, Berkshire, in Coin hoards from Roman Britain IX, 279-323.
