Summary
[edit]DescriptionNorth Bank and Islands at College Lake - geograph.org.uk - 1397585.jpg |
English: North Bank and Islands at College Lake When the quarry was still working three areas were left excavated to act as islands and one was covered with shingle to encourage terns to nest. Their height was based on calculations as to how high the water would rise when the quarry closed and pumping ceased. (As the quarry is chalk it was assumed that water would drain away through the chalk.).
The calculation proved to be over optimistic and the water rose until the islands were completely submerged as was the site of a hide placed to view them. In September 2000 the north bank was modified to provide two further islands, Big Paddy and Little Paddy and still the water rose so that now (July 2009) Little Paddy is close to vanishing altogether.
