Description

Looking northeast across the Main Hall of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

The green airplane to the left is the Bell XP-59A Airacomet, the first American jet fighter aircraft. The tall missile is an SS-20, an intermediate-range nuclear missile deployed by the Soviet Union in the 1980s. The smaller missile next to it is a Pershing II, an intermediate-range nuclear missile deployed by the United States in the 1980s. Both missiles were banned by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty of 1988. (These missiles are inert, just shells.)

The big black plane is the North American X-15, the world's first operational spaceplane.
