Description
Deutsch: Wartungsarbeiten auf der Air-Base Ramstein an einer North American F-86F Sabre (F-86F-25-NH Sabre, FU-291, s/n 51-13291) der 526th FBS (526th Fighter-Bomber Squadron), 86th FBW (86th Fighter-Bomber Wing), stationiert in Landstuhl AB, später Ramstein AB (Rheinland-Pfalz) zwischen 1953 und 1955. Die untere Hälfte des Seitenleitwerks incl. der Verlängerung auf dem Rumpfrücken war in der Staffelfarbe Rot des 526th FBS lackiert, oben Weiss gerandet. Die F-86F der anderen beiden Staffeln - 525th und 527th FBS - führten entsprechende Markierungen in Blau bzw. Gelb. Das Emblem des 86th FBW war auf der oberen Hälfte des Seitenleitwerks beidseitig angebracht. Die F-86F waren vom Frühsommer 1953 bis zum Frühjahr 1955 in Landstuhl bzw. Ramstein stationiert. Danach setzte die Umrüstung auf die F-86D "Sabre Dog" ein, und das Geschwader wurde umbenannt in 86th FIW (Fighter-Interceptor Wing).
  • Im Stadtarchiv der Marktgemeinde Giebelstadt sind für das Jahr 1954 Abstellungen des 86th FBW auf die USAFE Giebelstadt Air Base dokumentiert. Es wurden keine Staffelnummern festgehalten, so dass für das Jahr 1954 die F-86F Sabres folgender Staffeln/squadrons (attached) infrage kommen: 440th FIS, 496th FIS, 526th FIS und 527th FIS. Auch das genaue Datum der Stationierung und deren Dauer wurde nicht festgehalten. [1].

Lt. Joe Baugher's Aircraft Serial Number Search sind in West-Deutschland zwischen 1953 und 1955 folgende F-86F Sabre der USAFE verunglückt oder abgeschrieben worden:

  • 195?: 51-13411 (525th FIS, 86th FIW) crashed near Kaiserslautern, West Germany.
  • 1953: 51-13186 (?) damaged May 4, 1953 grd accident-Landstuhl AFB, W Germany.
  • 1953: 51-13259 (525th FIS, 86th FIW) w/o (written off) at Landstuhl AB, West Germany Jun 6, 1953.
  • 1953: 51-13319 (1738th FYS, 1708th FYW) crashed near Bad Dürkheim, West Germany Jun 24, 1953.
  • 1953: 51-13178 (527th FIS, 86th FIW) w/o (written off) in midair collision Jul 29, 1953 at RAF Bruggen (Brüggen), West Germany. Pilot killed.
