[edit]DescriptionNorth American F-100C Super Sabre ‘52879 - FW-879’ (really 53-1709) (29685538652).jpg |
c/n 214-1. Actual US military serial 53-1709. Although painted to represent an F-100D 55-2879, this is actually the first F-100C built and has a fascinating history. Delivered in 1956 to NASA Ames (Moffett Field) it was modified for variable stability use and became the field’s first three axis (roll, pitch and yaw) variable stability aircraft. In 1960 she moved to NASA Langley Research Centre with the identity NASA 25. By 1964 she was back at Ames was used to evaluate direct-lift control as a potential aid to Air-to-Air refueling. She also spent time at NASA Dryden, by now registered as NASA 703. Somewhere along the way she gained the tail surfaces of an F-100D. On retirement she was given by NASA Ames to the San Jose State University and was used in their aviation campus. Finally, in 2004, she moved South and after restoration and painting in a USAF scheme she went on display at the Castle Air Museum, Atwater, CA. 4th March 2016 (Much of the information above is from Joe Baughers indispensable website – thank you) |
