Summary
[edit]DescriptionNormanton Church - geograph.org.uk - 738197.jpg |
English: Normanton Church. St. Matthew's Church was an estate church, formerly in a meadow. The old church was demolished c. 1764, when the village was also demolished to enlarge the park of Normanton Hall. The inhabitants were transferred to new houses in Empingham. The present nave and chancel was built soon after this, and the tower and portico added by Thomas Cundy in 1826. It was to have been demolished to make way for Rutland Water, but was saved by voluntary subscription. The ground around it was raised and the building filled with rubble and concrete up to window level. A causeway was constructed from the shore. |
