Description

This is a south-bound, Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) freight train (loaded ballast train) at Marion, Ohio on 29 September 2018. The train was headed by two engines: NS # 7324 and NS # 8360.

The lead unit, NS # 7324, is a General Motors Electro-Motive Division SD9043MAC diesel locomotive. It was built in February 1998.

The second unit, NS # 8360, is a General Electric CW40-8. It was built in April 1991.

The red-and-white freight cars stenciled "Herzog" are ballast cars - the crushed gravel will be poured along railroad tracks to support the rails. Note that each ballast car has mounted (dust-covered) solar panels - these power the ballast release mechanisms.
