Description

This is an eastbound Norfolk Southern Railway container train at Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania in the late morning on 10 May 2016. The train is led by 3 units in standard Norfolk Southern black-and-white paint: NS # 9690 (a General Electric CW40-9), NS # 8442 (a General Electric CW40-8), and NS # 6927 (a General Motors Electro-Motive Division SD60E).

  1. 8442 was built in November 1994 and saw service in blue-and-white paint as Conrail # 743 - later renumbered to Conrail # 6269.
  1. 6927 was built as an SD60 in September 1986 and became Chicago & Northwestern # 8042. The unit has also been Union Pacific Railroad # 5994, Helm Financial Corporation # 5994, and Norfolk Southern # 6527.

The rocks in the Horseshoe Curve railroad cut (Kittanning Point; Kittanning Mountain) are fluvial sandstones of the Rockwell Formation (Famennian Stage to Kinderhookian Stage, upper Upper Devonian to lower Lower Mississippian).
