Northern Theatre of War 33 (Togokotti)

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Russian troops, under the command of Colonel-Lieutenant Kropotov and Cossack-Colonel Denisov, attack the village of Togokotti in Finland, on June 16/27, 1790, at both saw-mills on the narrow passes near lake Erwy, where the Swedish detachment of 600 man had to lay down their arms.
  • On 8 July 1790, Armfelt sent Georg Adlersparre with a Swedish detachment of 50 Life Dragoons and 240 infantry with 3 cannons from Waltola/Valdola (Hartola?) towards Davidstad (Taavetti), to capture the Russian magazines which they thought would be only lightly guarded. However, unbeknownst to Adlersparre, the Russians had just been reinforced by three additional regiments. After having pushed several Cossack outposts ahead of them, the advancing Swedish vanguard was stopped near Togakotti/Togokotti (Tuohikotti?) on 9 July, by one Russian battalion and 75 chasseurs, as well as the Cossacks. After a fierce fight at the cost of 18 dead, the Swedish detachment retreated back towards Waltola with a few Russian prisoners taken, while the enemies pursued. They were then cutoff at the narrows passages of Niveri (among the lakes northwest of Davidstad) by another Russian contingent which had marched out from Valkeala to block their escape route. The Swedes tried to break through the Russian encirclement, but were compelled to lay down their arms after four hours of desperate fighting; Adlersparre, three of his officers, and 67–82 privates had been captured. A large part of the Swedish detachment managed to escape through the woods. The Russian casualties had been light. – Elof Tegnér: studier ur Armfelts efterlemnade papper..
