Notes |
The title-page describes the series as 'A Series of Lithographic Drawings of Celebrated Horses, from Pictures Painted by James Ward, Esq, R.A. and Drawn on Stone by Himself', with a dedication to George IV, adding that 'The Animals from which the Pictures are painted, are of the most interesting character, either from the celebrity they have acquired for beauty of form, extraordinary qualities as racers or in the sports of the field, or for some peculiar circumstances connected with their history', and with details of production and price 'Published, for the Artist, by R. Ackermann, 101, Strand. Proofs on India Paper, selected and retouched by Mr. Ward, 14 Pounds the Set; Prints, 5 Guineas; and Single Prints, 8s. each. Printed by L. Harrison, 373, Strand'. The price '14 Pounds' is added in ink. The proofs have manuscript production details in ink or pencil, in two different (though very similar) hands, and often a mixture of both, in which cases the pencil annotations seem to be additions giving names of publishers which appear on the lettered states. Two letters from Ward concerning problems he was meeting in making these prints were published by Douglas Hall in 'The Tabley House papers', Walpole Society, XXXVIII 1960/2, pp.97-8. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
