English: A NOBLEMAN IN BANTAM
In this illustration, we see how an assembly of noblesse walks about in public in Bantam. An umbrella (payong) is carried over the head of the nobleman. He carries his kris in his sarong and is followed by servants carrying his betel box (box with betel nuts). The common people kneel in respect of the gentleman.* Title: How the chiefs and colonels perform on the streets. Text: When a chief or colonel goes in public one or two lances and a sword in a red or black sheath are being carried up front behind him are servants carrying a metal case and a water jug. An umbrella is being carried over his head according to custom. If locals are passing by they are not allowed to proceed instead they have to crouch until the chief has passed. The colonels are belted with an apron with gold filament streaked throughout. Their chest is naked but sometimes they wear a short jacket with sleeves adorned with velvet or red scarlet on their head they wear a Turkish turban of soft Bengali cloth. They carry their daggers in the front/ in the back or on the sides as they like it they call their daggers Cris, and strongly rely on them they have a glorious walk barefoot because they think it would be a shame to cover their feet. |
