Description
English: Oscar the 2nd, Swedish king, the son of Oscar the1st and queen Josefine, and king after the death of his brother Karl the15th who died in 1872. He was educated as a naval officer, but also carried out extensive humanistic studies. As king he tried in vain to find a compromise to solve the Norwegian administrative question. Although he looked upon the political developments in Norway with displeasure, he accepted them. His view on Norwegian affairs of course was colored by the fact that he was Swedish. In 1857, he married Sofie of Nassau. Their children were Gustav (the 5th), Oscar, Carl (later to become the Norwegian crown princess Märtha's father), and Eugen.
