Description
Norsk bokmål: Otto Neumann Knoph Sverdrup, polarforsker, styrmann (1878). Deltok i 1888 i Fridtjof Nansens skiferd over Grønland, kaptein på «Fram» under F.Ns polarekspedisjon 1893-96. I 1898 startet han en egen ekspedisjon med «Fram» for å seile rundt Grønland, men måtte snu og oppdaget istedenfor nye, store partier av Ellesmereøya og andre øyer som ble kalt med hans navn. I 1914 overtok han ledelsen av to russiske unnsetningsekspedisjoner med Eclipse og Hertha for å finne tre russiske ekspedisjoner i områder rundt Frans Josefs land. I 1920 ledet han en russisk ekspedisjon med isbryteren Sviatogor i Karahavet. I 1921 ledet han en handelsekspedisjon til Ob og Jenisej med isbryteren Lenin og fem handelsskip.
English: Otto Neumann Knoph Sverdrup, polar researcher, ship's mate. Took part in Fridtjof Nansen's expedition to Greenland in 1888, captain of the «Fram» during Fridtjof Nansen's polar expedition 1893-96. In 1898, he started his own expedition with the «Fram», sailing around Greenland, but had to turn back, and instead discovered new, large parts of Ellesmereøya (the Ellesmere Island) and other islands that were given his name. In 1914, he took over the leadership of two Russian rescue missions with the ships «Eclipse» and «Hertha», to find three Russian expeditions in the area around Franz Joseph Land. In 1920, he headed a Russian expedition with the ice breaker Sviatogor in the Kara Sea. In 1921, he headed a trading expedition to Ob and Yenisey with the ice breaker «Lenin» and five merchant ships.

Er war Kapitän auf der ³Fram² während FN´s Polarexpedition 1983-96. 1898 startete er eine eigene Expedition um mit der ³Fram² Grönland zu umsegeln. Er musste aber umkehren und entdeckte dafür neue, grosse Teile der Ellesmereinseln und anderer Inseln, die nach ihm benannt wurden. 1914 übernahm der die Leitung zweier russischer Rettungsexpeditionen mit der Eclipse und Hertha im Gebiet um das Franz Josef Land. 1920 leitete er eine russische Expedition mit dem Eisbrecher Sviatogor in der Karasee. 1921 leitete er eine Handelsexpedition zum Ob und Jenisej mit dem Eisbrecher Lenin und fünf Handelsschiffen.
