Object history Both of the trophies in the 1867 Melbourne Cup and the 1867 Queen's Plate trophy collection were won by the racehorse Tim Whiffler who was trained by Etienne De Mestre. The Melbourne Cup trophy was made in England by London firm W.R. Smily & Co, while William Edwards of Melbourne made the Queen's Plate trophy. The Melbourne Cup is Australia's most popular horse race, attracting the attention of the entire nation. The cups in this collection are extremely rare. Not only were these the only trophies awarded by the Victoria Racing Club for the entire 1867 spring meeting, but for the first quarter of a century of the running of the Melbourne Cup only four trophies were awarded. These trophies were the subject of great controversy because many Victorians believed the locally made Queen’s Plate trophy should have been awarded for the Melbourne Cup, rather than the foreign made trophy.
