et ofthe mountain streams opens into the valley of Mahmoudiyah,in the centre of which rises an isolated rock crowned by thepicturesque castle of Kosh-Ab. We pitched our tents on a green lawn, near the bank ofthe foaming stream which sweeps round the foot of the cas-tellated rock. Soon after our arrival a Kurdish Bey, of ve-nerable appearance, a descendant of the hereditary chiefs of * Moses of Chorene, 1. ii. c. 19. St. Martin, Mem. surlArmenie,vol. i. p. 139. NINEVEH AND BABYLON. (Chap. Mahmoudiyah, called upon me. He had once been theowner of the castle, but had been driven from it by an ad-venturer of some celebrity in this part of Kurdistan. Thismarauder had recently been captured by the Turks, who hadseized his property, but had not restored it to its rightfulowner. The village, once a town, whose ruined mosques,baths, and bridges still remain, was named Mahmoudiyah,after a certain Mahmoud Bey, who was of the noble Kurdishfamily claiming lineal descent from the Abbasside caliphs.

The Castle of Mahmoudiy.ih. of which the Bey of Jezirah, or Bohtan, is the acknowledgedhead. The castle, built in the fifteenth century, is calledNerin, or more generally Kosh-Ab, the sweet water, fromthe pure stream flowing beneath it.
