X.) DESCRIPTION OF THE CHAMBERS. 257 The chamber containing these sculptures had an entranceopening upon the edge of the mound. Of tliis doorway thereonly remained, on each side, a block of plain limestone,which may, however, have been the base of a sphinx or otherfigure. The outer walls to which it led^ had been panelledwith the usual alabaster slabs. Upon them were bas-reliefsof a campaign in a country already represented in anotherpart of the paiace,t and distinguished by a deep valleywatered by a river, vineyards, and wooded mountains. It is doubtful whether these walls belonged to a chamber,or formed part of the southern face of the palace, as theywere on the very brink of the platform. At right angles tothem, to the west, a pair of winged bulls opened upon an-other wall, of which there were scarcely any remains, andmidway between the two entrances was a deep doorway,^flanked on both sides by four colossal mythic figures, amongstwhich were the fish-godand the deity with thelions
