Summary

[edit]
Description
English: From Pharaonic times until relatively recently, annual Nile flood levels determined how much fertile silt would be brought into Egypt, how productive each year's crops would therefore be, and consequently how high taxation levels would be set. The steps lead down to the Nile, while the short horizontal marks on the walls (to the left of the steps) recorded the heights of previous inundations, and can clearly be seen here.
