Sprinters, herkenbaar aan het wit, blauw en gele uiterlijk, worden ingezet voor korte afstanden. De nieuwe generatie die bij Siemens wordt gebouwd, is herkenbaar aan een opstap die gelijkvloers is met het perron. Opvallend zijn glazen wanden tussen de compartimenten en de machinistencabine, waardoor je dwars door de hele trein kunt kijken. Bijzonderheid is dat deze Sprinters bij het remmen stroom terugleveren aan de bovenleiding, waar andere treinen weer mee gevoed kunnen worden. De NS heeft bijna 100 van deze metro-achtige treinen besteld. In totaal steekt NS de komende jaren 647 miljoen euro in nieuwe Sprinters, goed voor 37.000 zit- en staanplaatsen. Edit: Tijdens de winter van 2010-2011 treden er grote problemen op met deze treinen. Van de 95 afgeleverde treinstellen rijden er eind december 2010 nog maar een stuk of zeven rond. De rest staat stil. 67 bezweken er onder de sneeuw, de overige treinen staan achter defecte treinen en kunnen dus niet weg. Het probleem wordt waarschijnlijk veroorzaakt door een omvormer die onder de trein zit en niet zoals bij andere treinen op het dak. Die omvormer zuigt de sneeuw aan die tussen de rails ligt. |
