En 1769, à la suite de la convention des Limites, Louis XV cède à l'impératrice Marie-Thérèse les villages de Dranoutre, Neuve-Église et quelques terres sur la commune de Nieppe contre le retour à la France d'enclaves autour d'Estaires. Une nouvelle frontière se dessine entre les territoires autrichiens et français matérialisée par des bornes dans un paysage uniforme où aucun élément naturel, tel une rivière, ne permet de distinguer la limite du territoire. Chaque borne est gravée, sur une face, de trois fleurs de Lys, symbole de la royauté française ; sur la face opposée, de l’aigle bicéphale, symbole de la couronne impériale d’Autriche.
