Bergfried. Der Bergfried (eigentlich: Donjon) wurde als erste Gebäude der Burg gegen Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts errichtet. Er steht auf dem Ostende einer schmalen Felszunge, davor der tiefe Halsgraben. Der Donjon war auf den Burgen des Hochadels in ganz Europa verbreitet. Er diente als Wohnturm, Festung und war Symbol der Macht. Im Innern befanden sich Wohn-, Mannschafts- und Vorratsräume, Verlies und Kapelle. Er war beheizbar, hatte Toiletten und konnte verteidigt werden. Zugang zuerst von der Südseite her über eine Leiter. Nach dem Bau des Haupttores und der Wehrmauer wurden der jetzt ebenerdige Eingang und im 14. Jahrhundert ein Treppenturm errichtet. Verfall des Mauerwerks, nachdem das Dach um die Wende des 18. Jahrhunderts zum Abbruch verkauft worden war. Wiederrichtung im Jahre 1906. Von 1925 is 1944 Sitz eines Heimatmuseums. Nach schweren Schäden im Zweiten Weltkrieg in den Jahren 1954 und 1955 erneut aufgebaut und 1979 wieder mit einem Dachhelm versehen. Seitdem wieder Museum.
