Notes | "Lower edge of engraving reads: F. T. Delius. Del. Zellis. J. C. B. Sc. [Johann Boecklin?] No date; ca. early 18th century. Image shows Nickel List in wig and greatcoat, holding a trimmed hat & also a cane. Printed on a fairly thin, laid paper. Attacted to a 6 ½” x 9 ¼” sheet of cream colored paper card, by a pasted paper strip along the back of the top edge of the engraving. Size of print might have been trimmed at an earlier date. Lower left corner shows slight wear, paste spots to back lower corners, from an earlier mounting; some dusting, age-tanning to surface of paper; small stain in right-hand margin. See scan. An early image of the notorious leader of a band of robbers, Nickel List, was also a barkeep & restaurant owner in Beutha, his gang robbed treasures from churches, among other things; he was executed in 1699. This print could have been made quite close to that period. Rare item! From the personal collection of Pittsburgh art dealer, Charles A. Wunderly" |
