English: Lt. Col. Nicholas F. Marano, commanding officer of the southern California-based 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, addresses Marines and sailors during a memorial service Aug. 19, 2006, for Lance Cpl. Jeremy Z. Long in Zella, Iraq. Long, an 18-year-old from Sun Valley, Nev., lost his life Aug. 10, 2006, while conducting combat operations through a Euphrates River village near the Iraq-Syria border. Long, a rifleman with the battalions Company A, was about a month shy from returning to the United States with his battalion when he died. The Marines, based out of this small, dusty outpost along one of Iraqs main highways in Al Anbar Province, provide security for villages along a stretch of road and encounter deadly roadside bombs on a regular basis sometimes finding up to three in any given week. The battalion is scheduled to return home to the States next month and will be replaced by another southern California-based unit. Marano, 44, is a native of Philadelphia. |
