Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Newport: mural plaque Explanation of the 696241. It states: The Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company (1848-1880) carried coal & iron ore from the eastern valleys to wharves along the river Usk at Newport. It combined the railway with the canal company of 1792. Locomotives №6 (1849) and №18 (1852) were built by Stothert & Slaughter. Standard wagons were introduced in 1849 with a capacity of 5 tons and wheels designed to travel on 4' 4" tramway and 4' 8½" railway gauge. Monmouthshire canal boats carried 25-28 tons and were 64' 9" by 9' 2", shorter and broader than boats on other canals.
