Summary
[edit]DescriptionNewhaven Marine - geograph-3106581-by-Simon-Carey.jpg |
English: Newhaven Marine Station One of three stations all within a mile of one another, Newhaven Town and Newhaven Harbour being the other two. This one opened in 1885 as Newhaven Harbour but was destroyed by fire and rebuilt a couple of years later. This building survived into the 1960s when it was demolished and replaced by the current one. However, boat trains from London ceased operating sometime in the following decade and the station, renamed as Newhaven Marine in 1984, became disused with the last passenger service withdrawn in 2006 and the buildings declared unsafe thereafter. Yet the station has not technically closed as one train a day is still timetabled to arrive and depart though you cannot buy a ticket as the station does not exist on the database and you cannot get to the station as the platforms are on private land. This was the original station to catch the ferry from, when the terminal was moved, Newhaven Harbour became the specific station for that service, however, today that is slowly rotting away as most passengers are now directed to Newhaven Town. With a new port access road due to be built and the plan to concentrate services in one area it may mean the possibility of rejuvenation but in the meantime it remains little more than a ghost station. |
