That company has been incorporated, and has enteredupon its undertaking with exceeding bright prospects before it. THE FRENCH SHORE QUESTION. In January of last year the Premier was invited by HisMajestys Government to confer with them on the Treaty ShoreQuestion. He proceeded to England in February, and was therejoined by the Hon. E. P. Morris, K. C, one of the members ofthe Colonial Ministry. A conference presided over by theRight Hon. Joseph Chamberlain, Secretary of State for theColonies, and which included, amongst other members, theMarquis of Landsdowne, Lord Onslow, Lord Westmeath, SirThomas Saunderson, Sir John Anderson, Sir Montague Ommaney,Mr. Bertram Cox and the two Newfoundland delegates who dis-cussed the question during several weeks, and negotiations wereopened with France for a settlement of the long outstanding

WHITBOURNE. Fifty-seven miles by rail from St. Johns is the picturesquelittle town of Whitbourne, the only inland town in Newfound-land. It is here that the machine shops of the Newfoundlandrailway are established, and here also is the beautiful countryseat of the Hon. Sir Robert Bond, K. C. M. G., Premier of theancient colony, an illustration of which is produced on theopposite page. The village is charmingly situated at the headof Hodge Waters, a magnificent string of lakes, which stretchsome ten miles to the southward, and almost meet the tidalwaters of St. Marys Bay. An ideal spot this for tourists andsportsmen. The streets in Whitbourne are well made, andmain lines of road connect the village with St. Marys Bay,Trinity Bay and Conception Bay.
