collected here, and the fishermen in their high-sea boots andstout jerseys crowded the narrow streets. Hardy, sturdy-look-ing men they were, much resembling our own East Coast fisher-men who trawl on the Doggerbank, and like them a simple andkindly people. Not only are they hard, courageous seamen,with their little craft ever braving a dangerous sea in a rigor-ous climate, but they are also exceptionally handy even assailors. It is the ambition of each man to own his own schooner,and as a rule the boats of the Newfoundlander from truck tokeel has been the work of his own hands. He has cut thetrees in the forest, shaped the timbers, built his hull, made hisspars and his sails, and in many cases also rigged his completedcraft with ropes of his own making. He was an invaluableman in a man-of-war in the old days of sail and «woodenwalls,)) and the British press-gangs were often landed to findhim out. Even in these days of steam and steel he is the sortof man we want for the British Navy.

NEWFOUNDLAND. 37 RECRUITING FOR THE NAVY. Last year it was decided to form a Royal Naval Reserve inNewfoundland, and the Governor, Sir H. E. MCallum, withCommodore Giffard, of his Majestys ship « Charybdis,» made atour of the island, and found that the proposition of theGovernment met with a ready response. The scheme involveda six months training at sea and gunnery training on shore.Fifty young men, sealers and cod fishermen, were selected andtaken for a winter cruise in the «Charybdis.» We like to catchour man-of-war sailors young at home, and these were consider-ably older than the boys whom we recruit in the British Isles,but being so handy and adaptable, and sailors from their child-hood, they learned their new duties, as the commodore reported,very quickly, and soon became proficient in gunnery. It is com-plained that there is difficulty in recruiting a sufficiency of boysfor our Navy. Surely, therefore, it is important that nothingshould be done to discourage the growth of
