[edit]DescriptionNewcastle Anglican Cathedral on 21 April 2023 (28a).JPG |
The reredos in St Nicholas Anglican Cathedral, or Newcastle Cathedral, in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England. Its framework was carved in Uttoxeter marble, at some time between 1873 and 1887 by Robert Beall (1835–1892) of Newcastle, possibly to the design of architect Robert James Johnson (1832–1892). All of the reredos was carved by Beall, except for the larger figures in stone, which are by James Sherwood Westmacott. The smaller figures in alabaster (such as the angels on the bottom row) are by Beall, being similar in style and material to his figures on the pulpit. Showing an alabaster angel by Beall. These angels, on the bottom row of the reredos, hold shields. The shields are not coats of arms of people; they are carved with religious symbolism. |
