Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This image, acquired on 15 August by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, shows the lava flow generated by the Geldingadalir Volcano in Iceland. The eruption started in an uninhabited valley a few kilometres from the capital Reykjavík on 3 August. At the moment, the eruption has not caused any damage, but due to the proximity of Keflavík International Airport and of numerous infrastructures, the volcanic activity is being closely monitored by experts from the Icelandic Geological Survey. Experts fear that the lava flow could affect the road network in the southern part of the island in the coming weeks. The open data of the Copernicus missions allow the monitoring of volcanoes worldwide with innovative techniques. A detailed overview can be found here.
