THE MYSTERY OF NIAGARA Age of the Cataract—Origin of Its Name The origin and age of Niagara can only be conjectured. Geolo-gists have arrived at approximatefigures and have advanced varioustheories respecting the beginning ofthe mighty cataract. The mapsand pictorial works of the presentday give Niagara as it looks to thehundreds of thousands of touristswho visit the cataract yearly andmarvel at its mighty flow. The rate of the recession of thefalls is ah\aj-s an interesting sub-ject. Scientists who have givenmuch stiidy to this feature informus that ten thousand years maycover the period of the excavationof the prestnt gorge and while be-fore the long ages of the glacialice drift there was probably a pre-glacial Niagara. Careful measure-ments, covering a period of sixtyyears, show a retrosession of theFalls of about 500 feet in a century, although some authorities claim this allowance is too great. Atthis rate of recession, it is estimated the Falls will move abouta mile southw^ard
